Recently I had the chance to work out at the Pure Barre studio in Mt. Pleasant, SC. This is a zero impact total body workout that if performed regularly, creates a lean physique and builds strength and balance.
According to the Pure Barre website
“In just 55 minutes you will achieve a full-body workout concentrating on the areas women struggle with the most: hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms.
The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, protecting your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk. The technique works to defy gravity by tapering everything in and lifting it up!”
I walked into the serene room, ballet barre flanking either side and was instructed, along with the other patrons, to put our personal items away in the cubbies, grab a small medicine ball and some weights and find a spot.
Each spot is equipped with a yoga mat and a resistance tube.
The workout started easily enough, a little warm up of arm and leg movements and some stretching…and then
I just zoned out and became really in the moment, focused entirely on how my body was moving.
The workout focused on hip, thighs, buttocks, abs and arms and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the movement, much like yoga or meditation does. If you’re looking into a workout that you can completely lose yourself in, you may want to give Pure Barre a try.
Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretch section which creates long, lean muscles; much like that of a dancer. These instructors look amazing!
It’s truly a workout that engages you on a complete level, body, mind and soul!
Just a few things to note when trying Pure Barre for the first time.
Stay covered, long yoga pants are best to keep your muscles warm, you’ll be doing isometric work that is designed to target your muscles with no pressure on your joints; low impact, no bouncing or jumping.
It will take you a few visits to understand the lingo too, specifically the “tuck” which is one of the fundamentals of Pure Barre.
“….engage your core during exercise as it brings your spine to a neutral position reducing the weight on the spinal discs as well as reducing nerve impingement in the spine. Pure Barre calls this movement “tucking,” which involves squeezing your glutes and bracing your abdominal muscles. Tucking strengthens the muscles that protect us from spinal injuries and reduces further damage to current spinal injuries.” (Pure Barre website)
By engaging your abs and pulling your hips up in you centralize the sections of the body you’re working on. Rather than follow an instructor visually, you really need to listen to their words and fully engage your body and focus on what they’re telling you to do.
You WILL become lost in the movement and your muscles will tremble as you’re working them to fatigue, that’s what you want for a long, lean, toned body.
I cannot reiterate enough how lost in this workout I was with the lights low and even lower during the cool down, music, upbeat and fun. If you haven’t tried a Pure Barre class, I highly recommend looking for a class near you.
